Andro Semeiko: On the Verge
2024
postROOM Gallery, London
Andro Semeiko, London-based Georgian-British artist, creates paintings, installations, and artist's books that seek to capture and construct psychological spaces, focusing on our volatile world in turbulent times. For this exhibition, he has produced a series of paintings that, with humour and irony, reflect the anxiety of reconfiguring the role of ‘men’ in society—along with his own place—through the figures of knights, the hollowness of their poses. The new works explore how we engage with the world heavily influenced by news and social media, amid the rapidly evolving technological landscape, the looming threat of climate disaster, and ongoing global instability and conflicts.
The paintings employ various techniques and styles. Some sections feature plain abstract patches of colour, while others are filled with detailed, realistic depictions. Certain areas are smooth, while others are thickly textured. These elements merge into a satirical, surrealist collage that amuses and entertains, yet leaves us with unsettling existential questions about the future.
